Case Study:
Billing for the Use of Washing Machines in the Housing Industry

Problem definition:

A housing development company wants to simplify billing for the communal washing machines in its properties. The goal is to replace the existing flat-rate system using “laundry tokens” with a billing system based on energy consumption. In addition to simplifying billing, the goal is to provide users with a financial incentive to save energy.

Solution approach:

The washing machines and dryers are activated before each use via an RFID tag that is unique to each user. The energy consumption of the wash or dry cycle is recorded by a calibrated meter. Once the program is detected as complete, the recorded data (user, duration of use, type of use, and energy consumption) is reported to the housing company’s central server. The entire control system is managed by a Pro-Controller.

Result:

Charges for the use of the communal washing machines are now automatically included with the rent payment. User satisfaction has increased, since there is no longer a need to stock up on laundry tokens. And energy is being saved as well: Users are now choosing energy-saving cycles more often to save money.
